Julius Caesar

The oppidum is located in Maastricht at an altitude of approximately 120 meters above sea level in the southern part of the Sint-Pietersberg on the Caestert Plateau southeast of Kanne and west of Klein-Ternraai.

The later Caestert Castle and the Caestert Farm were built in the northeast of the oppidum. The oppidum was strategically placed on a narrow part of this plateau, so that the fortification bordered both valleys.

The fortification is seen as one of the places where the Atuatuca fortress may have been located, which Julius Caesar mentioned in his work Commentarii de bello Gallico. Caesar may have named the castle after the Atuatuci because the Eburones were subordinate to this tribe at the time.
